Description :

Conditions were becoming critical for the Calvert Scientific Expedition: provisions were becoming low, water was difficult to find and the steep sandridges were so numerous that the expedition was only covering about 10 miles a night. The previously plotted location of Joanna Springs was still some four days away provided the condition of the camels did not deteriorate further. Lawrence Wells recorded in his diary entry for 27 October 1896 his distress at being so close to the target and yet having to abandon equipment and collections in a desperate flight for safety for men and camels.

The expedition had set out in June 1896 from Lake Way in Western Australia to explore to the north through the central region of Western Australia. They were to search for mineral resources and pastoral lands and make collections of botanical, zoological and geological specimens. All of these, including cameras and glass plate negatives would be abandoned as the expedition made a last dash for safety and survival.
