Description :

William Light arrived in South Australia on 17 August 1836, and found that some settlers had already arrived and erected their tents on Kangaroo Island. Light's instructions from the Colonization Commissioners stated that he was to find the best site for the main settlement, and after examining Kangaroo Island he did not consider that it was suitable for a major town and moved across to the mainland and Saint Vincent Gulf to explore there. On 24 September he began his search for the excellent harbour that Captain John Jones had reported discovering in the Gulf.

Light's instructions were quite unreasonable given the time constraints he also faced: he was to examine some 1500 miles of coast, select the best site, and survey the town site and the country sections. His staff was inadequate, and his second ship, Cygnet carrying the bulk of their supplies had not yet arrived from England. His team had no animal transport; everything would have to be done on foot. Settlers continued to arrive and were impatient to take up their land, when an official site had not yet been selected.
