Fish market of the Central Market, photographed September 28th 1922. Edwin Daw's central fish market and adjoining iceworks are shown. These brick-fronted sheds face west and stand approximately in the centre of Acre 334. They were demolished in 1922 to make way for extensions to the City Arcade. The Central Market, established in 1869, came about as a result of an act of rebellion by a small group of fruit and vegetable market gardeners who were angry about the monopoly Richard Vaughan's East End market had on trade. The Central Market buildings initially consisted of some sheds which over time became dilapidated and unsightly. In 1899, the Central Market underwent refurbishment with more permanent structures being erected.As part of the 1899 redevelopment of the Central Market, extensive additions were made to the fish market. Since its establishment the fish market had been updated with the addition of a refrigeration plant for fish as well fruit and vegetables and the structure incorporated 16 shops on the Grote Street side. |
