West Terrace, East Side. Elephant Castle Hotel, 20th August 1971, Hotel frontage is 17 1/3 yards Elephant and Castle Hotel, taken 20th August 1971. The hotel is on the east Side ofWest Terrace, corner of Gilbert Street and has a frontage is 17 1/3 yards. This photograph is prior to the changes made in the 1970s when fake brick cladding was added and the balconies were removed. The Elephant and Castle first existed in 1849 slightly north of its present position on the corner of West Terrace and Gilbert Street. It was rebuilt in 1879, to the design by Thomas English in 1878.Built on one of the highest points in the city, the Elephant and Castle was one of the few hotels whose cellar was not affected by a flash flood which hit Adelaide in 1924. The hotel is one of the few in Adelaide with an imaginative name. Unfortunately the 'elephant and castle' window was lost during over-enthusiastic renovations. |
