Description :
The Second Vatican Council confirmed a movement towards community worship in Catholic churches. This saw changes in styles of worship as well as the building of new churches where the design allowed more involvement between the people and the priest. When the new Goodwood Catholic church was built in 1969, it was the only circular Catholic church in South Australia. Fr. Patrick Kelly looked at styles of new churches in other states before two major building projects in his parish were undertaken, at Goodwood and North Unley. The Goodwood church was designed by Brian Taylor, of noted church architects Taylor and Nevaskas, and was built by WH Blunden. The sanctuary was placed centrally, fitting with the Vatican's new liturgical guidelines of 1964. The church is built of warm-toned clinker bricks with a large lantern above the main altar providing extra light. The well-known religious artist and sculptor Voitre Marek was responsible for the exterior cross and most of the church's internal fittings and artwork.
