Description :
Mary Colton was born Mary Cutting in London in 1822 and came to South Australia with her father in 1839. She married a saddler named John Colton who became a wealthy man and was knighted in 1891. The Coltons were members of the Gawler Place Wesleyan Chapel and later Pirie Street Methodist Church. Mary Colton was one of the state's first Sunday School teachers and throughout her life worked for those in need - particularly women and children. Along with her diverse social work, she held weekly Bible classes for girls and in 1884, with wider church backing, she opened the Young Women's Christian Association in Adelaide. She was involved for long periods with many social welfare and church organisations, working with the Social Purity Society to raise the age of consent in South Australia from 12 to 14 years in 1885 and was president of the South Australian Women's Suffrage League which helped women to gain the vote in 1894. In 1893 she was founding president of the Methodist Women's Auxiliary of Foreign Missions. Lady Colton died in 1898.
