Description :
The oldest charitable institution in Adelaide was founded in 1849 by a group of Christian men. Most of the aid provided by the Adelaide Benevolent and Strangers' Friend Society in its early years was to women with families - partly because they were most easily able to prove themselves to be 'the deserving poor' rather than malingerers. Money was often provided to enable the recipients to be self-supporting, such as by providing a mangle (wringer) so that a woman was able to earn a living by taking in washing.
