Today Moravia is part of the Czech Republic. In previous centuries members of the Moravian faith suffered much persecution, and in the 18th century a group fled to Saxony, establishing a unique Christian community at Herrnhut. In 1864 two Moravian Brothers, Gottlieb Walder and Heinrich Meissel, arrived from Germany to establish a mission on the Cooper's Creek. This was partly in gratitude to the Aboriginal people of the area who had cared for John King, a survivor of the Burke and Wills expedition in 1861. After some delay, the missionaries left Adelaide in 1866 and arrived at Kopperamanna six months later, only to find that Lutheran missionaries had already established another mission nearby. After many difficulties the Moravians were instructed to close the mission in May 1869. Meissel returned briefly to Point McLeay where the two had previously received some training, and Walder eventually went to Jamaica as a missionary. A Moravian congregation met at Bethel near Kapunda until 1907. |
