Description :

Frederick Fairweather's "Expences at the Diggins" 8 May to 24 June 1852 and "Gold sold at the Diggins" 3 May to 29 May 1852. Lists all his purchases of food and supplies, and includes mention of gold and sovereigns remitted to his wife Mary at Mitcham SA. A separate sheet details equipment, food and beverages, travel costs from Melbourne to the Bendigo goldfield, 18 April 1852, and his share in a tent and goods needed, 3 May 1852.

The 1852 gold rush to Victoria left Adelaide and surrounds mainly populated by women, children, and older and sick men who could not work at the goldfields - most able-bodied men journeyed interstate to find their fortune. Frederick Fairweather's lists provide an example of the everyday requirements of a digger, and note gold and monies sent back home to his wife Mary at Mitcham, South Australia.
