Description :

Three men using picks to mine ore at Iron Monarch, near Whyalla, South Australia.


Iron ore was first mined in the Middleback Ranges on the northern Eyre Peninsula in 1880. The prinicpal sites of iron are mining are Iron Knob, Iron Monarch, Iron Prince and Iron Baron.
 
Iron ore from this area of South Australia contributed greatly to the establishment and success of Australia's steel industry.
