University of Adelaide: Mitchell Building The University of Adelaide was established in 1874 with a central city location on North Terrace. Wealthy copper miner and grazier Sir Walter Watson Hughes made a substantial donation towards its foundation. The University commenced teaching in 1876, offering Bachelor of Arts degree courses. The Mitchell Building is the University's oldest building and originally housed the entire University. Its foundation stone was unveiled by the Governor of South Australia, Sir WFD Jervois, in 1879 and the building was completed in 1882. In 1881 the University of Adelaide was the first Australian university to admit women to science courses and its first science graduate was also the University's first female graduate - Edith Emily Dornwell. |
