'Glendi' means celebration in Greek and the festival is just that, a celebration of Greek culture and heritage. The Glendi was started in 1978 by the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic with the West Torrens Football Club. It was originally planned as a fundraiser, but became an annual event when it was recognised as a way in which Adelaide's Greek community could celebrate its traditional culture and promote it to the wider community.

For many years the Glendi was held over a weekend in March; from 2009 it is held in October. The festival's program includes performances of dance, song and music. The festival also hosts displays of work from students involved in the Glendi schools program; cultural pavilions, and exhibitions by Greek artists. There are cooking demonstrations and many food and drink stalls selling traditional fare such as lamb on the spit, roasted goat, octopus and ouzo.
