Description :
The oldest church in South Australia is Holy Trinity Anglican Church on North Terrace, Adelaide. The church was built in 1838. A prefabricated wooden building had been sent out from England with the Colonial Chaplain (Charles Howard) but was found to be unusable, and consequently funds were raised to erect a stone building, with only the belfry from the wooden kit being used. The building was enlarged in 1844 and again in 1889. In the earliest years of settlement Trinity was the centre of the local Anglican community - both socially and theologically. The earliest members were of a 'low church' or evangelical outlook and the church has remained of this view to the present day, emphasising preaching and mission, while most Anglicans in South Australia tend to be of a 'high church' or Anglo-Catholic outlook, with more emphasis on ritual and tradition.
