Description :

Extract from a letter dated 22 July 1842 by Benjamin Boyce to his parents in Lincolnshire, detailing his trip to Australia and his experiences in jumping ship upon landing at Port Adelaide.

The sketch of Port Adelaide, looking across the harbour compliments the extract. The artist Kelly, has included are a number of moored vessels to wards buildings in the background and there are two men net fishing from a small rowboat in the foreground. Dr Kelly emigrated to South Australia aboard the Baboo in 1840. He began a medical practice at Port Adelaide, and was appointed assistant surgeon at Adelaide Hospital in 1841. Dr Kelly bought land at Morphett Vale in 1842, naming the property 'Trinity', and began planting vines in 1845. In 1854, he married Annie Worthington (1826-1912). He was also an accomplished artist.
