Description :

Children using play equipment in the garden of a kindergarten, August 1938. A ladder, set of steps, slide, sand pit and cubby house provide all the delights necessary for young preschoolers. The sawhorses in the foreground are probably intended for the children to 'ride' on as mock horses. The scene reflects both the rush to get to the top to slide down and the more reflective but equally intense play in the sandpit (at left).

Free kindergartens for the poorer families of Adelaide were established in 1905 with the formation of the Kindergarten Union of South Australia. The first kindergarten was opened in February the following year in Franklin Street, Adelaide.
