A circular letter, dated 5 October 1945, sent to members of the Australian Women's Land Army, South Australia, regarding the winding up of the Land Army on 31 December and requesting information on their plans for employment in civilian life. The Australian Women's Land Army was formed in 1942 in response to the acute shortage of rural workers. Recruits were required to be British subjects or immigrants from Allied nations and to be between 18 and 50 years of age. Some farmers expressed initial skepticism about the prospects of farm work being done by women with little experience on the land, but many Women's Land Army workers earned respect for their contributions. |
