A handmade hornbook consisting of the alphabet in capital letters, and with the vowels in lower case letters, framed in a leather paddle, and covered with a protective sheet of translucent animal horn. Hornbooks were alphabet sheets used generally between the 16th and 18th centuries to assist with the teaching of reading. At their simplest they contained the letters of the alphabet, but many contained some common letter combinations and perhaps the Lord's Prayer as a piece of reading material. The hornbook was later superseded by the battledore, which usually included some illustrations. This simple example of a hornbook has some association with Sir Josiah Symon of 'Manoah', as it contains a small handwritten note written by Miss E Symon, his daughter. |
