Description :

Thirty two page letter, with postscript, dated 28 August 1915, written by Private John Jensen to his aunt in Australia. He describes his experiences during the Cairo riots in April 1915, the landing at Gallipoli, the subsequent battles with the Turkish forces and being wounding during battle, and his convalescence in England.

Private John Jensen, D.C.M., M.M., was born at Spalding in South Australia, he volunteered on 19 August 1914 and departed Australia with the 1st Infantry Battalion. Jensen was wounded in action at Gallipoli and returned to Australia in January 1916. In November 1916 he rejoined the A.I.F. and served in France. In 1918 Jensen was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal [D.C.M.] and the Military Medal [M.M.].
