Description :

Portrait of W. Darmody from Nelpena from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/2).

Nilpena (Nelpena) Station is in the Flinders Ranges, 540km north of Adelaide, 39km north-west of Parachilna on the edge of Lake Torrens (salt lake). Today, the station is still a working cattle station. The station was held very early by the Browne brothers, who were among the earliest pastoral pioneers in the northern Flinders Ranges.

The original station buildings, desert landscapes and panoramas of the Flinders Ranges have made Nilpena a favourite location for Outback films and television commercials. Nilpena is also the site of the Ediacaran fossils, a national heritage site.

W. Darmody probably worked at Nilpena Station as manager as he was also manager of Moolooloo station before becoming the proprietor of the Prairie Hotel, Parachilna.
