Description :

Portrait of J. Clarke from Wilpena from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/1).

It is assumed J. Clarke is James Smith Clarke who arrived to South Australia 1858 and his occupation was listed as overseer in residence at Wilpena Station. This station was opened in 1851 and the lease taken up by the Browne brothers and Henry Strong Price. From an original 154 square miles it was added to annually until 1863 by which time it was 800 square miles in extent. At this stage it included the beautiful Wilpena Pound but a new lease drawn up in 1888 excluded this area. The homestead is situated on the Wilpena Creek.
