Description :

Portrait of H. Cameron from Port Gawler from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/3).

Shortly after the settlement of South Australia one of the largest pastoral properties north of Adelaide, consisting of 20,000 acres was granted to George Milner Stephen. It was called Port Gawler Estate. Stephen was the son-in-law of Governor Hindmarsh. The area was selected because of the fertility of the Gawler River region and in later years the paddocks would be irrigated by opening floodgates to release the river water into the pastures. Captain William Allen and Captain John Ellis subsequently purchased the right of the title to what became known as Port Gawler Station in 1839. In 1856 it was purchased by the brothers, William John and John Harris Browne, who were prominent in the South Australian pastoral industry. The station was subsequently named the Buckland Park and extended north beyond Port Wakefield. In 1910 it was taken up by the Brooks family.

The town of Port Gawler was surveyed in 1869 and was a shipping point for cargoes of grain and other produce from the district.

It is not known if H. Cameron was associated with the Port Gawler Estate (Buckland Park) or with the town of Port Gawler.
