In the 19th century home education was the norm for families living in remote areas of Australia. Wealthier families might have sent their children to boarding schools in the cities or employed a governess. In this work, which is one of the earliest educational treatises published in Australia, the author provides guidance to mothers in the teaching of history, geography, writing, music, and botany through a series of letters. In 'Letter 3' she writes about the teaching of hand writing, stating emphatically that she considered the teaching of capital letters first was unnecessary and also confusing. In this she has the same opinion as Benjamin Steill in his Royal Pictorial Primer, 1844. She may have been influenced by Steill, or both of them by the work of J H Pestalozzi, a pioneering educator who carried forward the ideas of Rousseau. |
