Description :

Letter to Mr. T. Marshall and his wife at "Wholonga" (Willunga), South Australia from his brother J. Marshall and wife Ann of Snitterby, Lincolnshire, England, written between 4 and 16 November 1846. The letter is in reply to one written 26 May 1846. Mr Marshall's letter of two pages, mentions the local harvest and prices of grain and the Corn Laws, the failure of potato crops, prices of livestock and the extensions to their house. He also mentions his brother at Willunga extending his farm size and increasing his sheep flock and stock, and trouble getting a "plow driven/r" (plough driver).

The recipient of the letter was Thomas Marshall (ca.1811-1880) of Willunga who arrived on the 'Singapore' in 1839. He was a farmer at Willunga and married Honor Williams from Cornwall in 1841. Their daughter Eliza Milne (1857-1933) was a grandmother of the donor.

The sender of the letter may be John Marshall, a farmer at Snitterby in the parish of Waddingham, Lincolnshire, mentioned in 'White's 1856 Lincolnshire' ('History, Gazetteer and Directory of Lincolnshire') and possibly the same person as the John Marshall aged 28 (born ca.1813), then unmarried, in the 1841 census for the parish of Waddingham, son of Robert Marshall, farmer.
