Description :

Nautical chart of Spencer's Gulf, St. Vincent's Gulf and Kangaroo Island. Shows position of lights, major hazards and depth readings. Includes some notes on natural features. Relief show by hachures


In 1836 Commander Thomas Lipson was appointed by the Admiralty as Naval Officer for South Australia He was also appointed Harbour-Master at Port Adelaide and Administrator of Marine Affairs by the Colonial Government. The Honourable Commissioners of H.M. Customs appointed him Collector of Customs for South Australia. In fulfilment of these roles he made several surveys of the South Australian coast for the Home Government.

In 1840 he resigned the Customs position, but remained Harbour-Master until 1855, when he was given rank as Post-Captain and retired on a life pension. Captain Lipson died on Oct. 25th, 1863.

Lipson Street, Port Adelaide the site of the South Australian Maritime Museum commemorates him.
