Description :

A scrapbook compiled by Robert Vernon Bulman (1882-1946) of Stirling East School. It contains embossed chromolithographs, or scraps, of birds, animals, 'English village' buildings, flowers, leaves, feathers, comical characters, ships and boats, costume and military uniforms, biblical and Christian scenes, vehicles, historical figures, dragons and other fantasy creatures, flags, bicycles and cyclists, and racist representations of black men as minstrel or comic characters; all pasted in a blank album published by Marcus Ward & Co. According to a label pasted on the cover, the album was entered in Class IV: Miscellaneous exhibits of the Public Schools' Floral and Industrial Society exhibition. It is not recorded whether this scrapbook won an award for Robert at the show.

Scrapbooks were a popular amusement for many children. Collecting and then arranging the brightly coloured chromolithograph scraps would provide fun in the evenings or on wet weekends. It was an activity shared by both boys and girls and continued into the mid-20th century. Some of the scraps Robert bought were very large and filled a substantial part of the page.

Robert Vernon Bulman was the son of Elizabeth Bulman, the licensee of the Aldgate Pump Hotel. He was later the Ambulance Officer of the South Australian Railways where he taught first aid, and a co-founder of the St John Ambulance Brigade in South Australia.
