John Woodforde - Medical advisor to Colonel Light. Arrived in South Australia on the "Rapid" in 1836 PRG 502 Papers of the Woodforde family comprising journal of Dr Woodforde, certificates, letter, photographs, in memoriam card, and miscellaneous notes. Attestation signed by H. O'Halloran and F.D. Woodforde. Dr John Woodforde (1810-1866) was appointed as surgeon aboard the survey brig 'Rapid' commanded by Colonel William Light, surveyor of the new colony's first city of Adelaide. When Woodforde's contract with the 'Rapid' expired after arriving in August 1836, Light appointed him Surgeon to the Survey Department at Rapid Bay. He soon established a private practice with regular consulting hours in Adelaide. In 1838 he married Caroline Carter (1813-1878). Dr Woodforde was William Light's personal physician. He and another physician, Dr Wright, attended Light during his final illness. Woodforde was an original member of the Medical Board which was founded in 1844. He was also Adelaide's Coroner from 1857 until his death in 1866. In 1847 he became one of 65 proprietors of South Australia's Church of England Collegiate School which became St Peter's Collegiate School a year later. His son William John Woodforde (1841-1910) was a member of two expeditions into central Australia under John McDouall Stuart (1815-1866) between 1860 and 1862. His daughter Harriet Julia Woodforde (1842-1912) married Thomas Joseph Shuldham O'Halloran (1835-1922), a stipendary magistrate and son of the first Commissioner of Police, in 1862. |
