Description :

Aboriginal child on a paperbark raft, Yirrkala.

Across Arnhem Land, rafts were used in swamps and wetlands to help people collect goose eggs, cockles, water-lilies and to provide a vantage point from which to spear fish.

The rafts were made from paperbark trees, a species of melaleuca with flaky exfoliating bark, sitting atop a base of pandanus stems to assist floatation.
