Description :

The article reminisces about the early days at Port Adelaide, and then talks about the new developments and concrete wharves being constructed.

The article reminisces about the early days of Port Adelaide as the river was gradually turned into a thriving port. It then turns to the modern developments that are transforming the wharves and working conditions on them. McLaren Wharf was the first to be built in the new port after it was re-located in 1840 from the original port further up the river above the current Jervois bridge.

When the South Australian government resumed ownership of all privately owned wharves in the port following 1916 it discovered that many of them were in poor condition and that the dredging programme to deepen the harbour had a detrimental affect upon the old wooden piles. Re-building of the old wharves became necessary.

This allowed modernisation as well: concrete wharfs were built: Number 1 Quay was the first to be modernised, and was completed in 1929, followed by Ocean Steamers wharf a few years later. McLaren wharf 's re-building was completed in 1935 and at the same time it was brought into alignment with the adjacent wharfs as it had protruded further into the river than the others.
