Description :

Graves Street looking West.

Kadina, situated on the northern end of Yorke Peninsula is approximately 10 km inland from its closest port, Wallaroo and 148 km by road from Adelaide.

Kadina, a derivation of the Narungga name for the area "Caddy Yeena" or 'Kadiyinya' meaning Lizard Plain, was surveyed in 1861 to become the business centre of the Wallaroo-Moonta copper mining field first discovered in 1859.

Today, this mining activity no longer occurs but Kadina has maintained itself as the administrative, shopping and business centre of the Yorke Peninsula.

This postcard depicts the south-east corner of Graves and Hallett Streets, or the address 16 Graves Street Kadina.

A building had been on this site since before 1890, however it was Charles Moore a Victorian merchant who purchased the block of land in 1901 and erected the store depicted on the card. Moore's traded in Kadina until 1975 and also opened a large store in Adelaide and stores in Victoria and Western Australia.

Bailey (1999, p 32) notes that the building lay deserted for a few years until it was purchased by Enfield Furnishers, who still occupy it. Some alterations have been made to the fa ade over time.

To view this building in its current form you can go to Google maps and use street view.
