Description :

The short-lived New Adelaide gazette was published in fourteen issues between September and December 1933, by the Central Traders and Central Market Stallholders' Associations. Its aim was to promote the city businesses trading between Grote and Gouger Streets. The newspaper was free, and was published by G. Fort and V. Walters, and printed at Jennings' Printing Works, Rose Park. It was perhaps an attempt to revive the earlier New Adelaide news. Three major stores of the time backed the publication and placed large advertisements in its pages, the two department stores, People stores, and Charles Moore, and the shoe shop, Ezywalkin's. Advertisements for smaller businesses also appeared, including the Melville Fish Cafe (P. Constantine proprietor) and the Empire Theatre - both in Grote Street. The newspaper consisted of four pages. Apart from advertisements, it also contained fashion articles and recipes - another way of promoting local businesses. The first editorial stated the Gazette's aim was to increase trade in the area. Very little news was printed, apart from sports results, which mostly consisted of horse racing, tennis, cycling and 'pedestrianism.' Occasionally some general news which directly affected the business people of the area was reported, such as Adelaide City Council elections. However, later issues of the newspaper included editorials discussing political matters. The final issue of the New Adelaide gazette appeared on 15 December 1933.
