Description :

The path to selecting the site for Adelaide was not an easy one. In fact, South Australia's first governor, John Hindmarsh, firmly disagreed with surveyor-general William Light's choice. Hindmarsh preferred a site on Encounter Bay, close to the Murray Mouth.

Selections from this newspaper article published in the South Australian gazette and colonial register presents the viewpoint that South Australia's capital should be located near the River Murray. It reprints part of a letter from Colonel Robert Torrens, chairman of the South Australian colonial commissioners, which supports the argument for a capital site in the vicinity of the Murray.
