Description :

Printed sheet music was the main means of distributing popular music until the rapid spread of commercial radio broadcasting, and the development of more affordable and better-quality gramophone disc recordings, in the early 1920s. The romanticised Sunset on the Murray, a four page score for piano, was published by Cawthorne's in 1921.

George Cawthorne established Cawthorne Music House which sold sheet music, musical instruments and in later years, sound recording equipment, in Adelaide in 1870.

From 1900 composers began to identify more with areas of local scenic interest such as the River Murray which inspired titles such as this piece by Cyril Ross and Moonlight on the Murray by Stella Harslett published in 1901.
