Description :
The Julian Centre grew out of the ministry established when the former inebriates' retreat at Belair was given to the Anglican Church in 1942, becoming Retreat House. From 1967 Retreat House was run by the Sisters of the Community of the Holy Name. When the Sisters moved to Brighton, the Rev. Philip Carter ran Retreat House and oversaw the associated Ministry of Spirituality. The Diocese of Adelaide sold the building in 1996 and the Julian Centre for Spirituality, as it had become known, then moved to a building at Mile End. The Centre is named for Julian of Norwich, a 14th century English mystic and the first woman to write a book in the English language. The centre closed in November 2009.
