Originally published in America, this book also became popular in England. It contains activities for girls arranged under the broad headings - Games, Instructive games, Games of memory, Forfeits, Active exercises, Baskets, Ornaments, Puzzles, Riddles, Charades, Automata, Needlework, Bees, Silkworms, Keeping animals, Gardening, and Miscellaneous. Archery is among the active exercises recommended. It was popular with women from the 17th century.

This copy was owned by ER (Rosa) Clark of Hazelwood. Rosa Clark was the daughter of Francis and Caroline Clark who emigrated to South Australia in 1850. They built their family home and named it Hazelwood, after their English home. Part of Hazelwood was acquired by the South Australian government in 1914, and established as Hazelwood Park, a beautiful recreation park in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.
