Description :

Four young children practice their balance on a beam on the floor of the classroom.

Gymnastics assists in the development of fine and gross motor skills, in spatial awareness and confidence in the body' ability to undertake a range of tasks. In the absence of a proper gymnasium in the school, the teachers have laid a beam on the floor, and the children exercise their balance walking this. With the beam on the floor, any concern about falling from a raised beam is removed.

This photograph is from a series of views taken from lantern slides of kindergarten and infant school premises and activities in South Australia and New South Wales; the slides were owned and used by Lydia Longmore, O.B.E., the first woman to be an Inspector of infant schools in South Australia.
