The 1852 Victorian gold rush depleted the population of Adelaide and its surrounding areas as most able-bodied men travelled east to seek their fortunes. This left mainly women, children, older and sick men who were not strong enough to work on the goldfields.

Frederick Fairweather's lists provide an example of the everyday needs of a gold digger.  'Expences at the Diggins', 8 May to 24 June 1852 and 'Gold sold at the Diggins', 3 May to 29 May 1852,  list purchases of food and supplies. Also recorded are gold and money sent home to his wife Mary who lived at Mitcham in South Australia.

A separate sheet details Fairweather's set up costs in the form of equipment, food, beverages and travel costs from Melbourne to the Bendigo goldfield, 18 April 1852. The costs for his share in a tent and other equipment are also listed, 3 May 1852.
