Formed in late 1982 by Rodney Tyler, David Norris and Greg Vincent, their original music was influenced largely by British 1960s groups such as The Who and The Kinks.

In 1990 they produced one album The Sea of Art released on cassette, vinyl and CD in 1990 and this single, The Bismark Girls b/wThe Sea of Art both released under the Greasy Record label.

A Primitive Painters song Undertow appears on the Greasy Pop compilation album An oasis in a desert of noise released in 1985.

The line up for the Primitive Painters includes: Greg Bosano (drums), Colin Finlay (guitar, voice 1985-1987), Peter Long (Guitar voice 1987), David Norris (drums 1983-1985, 1990), Andy Przygonski (Drums 1990), Mark Shepherd (drums 1984-1986), Andrew Spy (drums 1985-1987), Rodney Tyler (Guitar, voice), Greg Vincent (bass, voice 1983-1985, 1987)
