This Adelaide Steamship Company advertisement offers reduced fares for its new steamers, South Australian, Victorian and Aldinga. These operated on the coastal run to Melbourne. The ASC was an aggressive competitor as it fought for monopoly of South Australian coastal and inter colonial trade. It could not force all of its competitors out of business but it did engage in fierce cost cutting wars which it usually won. Founded in 1875 the Adelaide Steamship Company (ASC) began operations with the steamship Flinders, which had originally been built for the Spencer's Gulf Steamship Company. Businessmen behind the Spencer's Gulf SS Company were also involved in the new Adelaide Steamship Company and following some manoeuvering by these stakeholders, Flinders was placed on the ASC's Melbourne run when she arrived from the builders. ASC continued to expand and bought South Australian and Victorian in 1876 and 1877. Almost identical in size at 716 and 718 tons, both ships could carry 100 passengers, had a cruising speed of 14 knots and used about 30 tons of coal a day. They were considered luxurious, speedy and efficient. |
