Description :
The Elephant and Castle Hotel was first built in 1849 slightly north of its present position on the corner of West Terrace and Gilbert Street. In 1878, architect, Thomas English, created a design for a new building. This was completed in 1879.
The Elephant and Castle was built on one of the highest points in the city and was therefore one of the few hotels whose cellar was not affected by a flash flood which hit Adelaide in 1924. A weighbridge originally stood on the site of the present bottle shop. Merchandise weighed upon it included wood and charcoal from Yankalilla. The hotel was also used as a coroner's court. Sometime in the early 1970s the building was modernised. The stonework was clad in fake brick and the balconies were removed.

Thomas English arrived in South Australia in 1850. He was a builder-architect with Henry Brown and an architect with Roland Rees for three years. George Soward was born at Norwood and became Thomas English's partner in 1882. After Thomas' death in 1884 his son took over the partnership. Soward eventually withdrew from the partnership but the name was retained by Joseph English until it became English, Soward and Jackman in 1925. This company then evolved into Jackman Gooden Architects.
