Bank services in Maitland commenced in 1875 with an agency for the Bank of South Australia in the general store, before opening their own branch. The National Bank of Australasia opened its first branch in Maitland in 1884, but as the town was not big enough to support two banks, it closed soon after, and did not reappear for another twenty years. The bank, shown here in 1940, operated at 51 Robert Street until 28 June 2002, when it became one of 56 branches of the National Australia Bank to close in regional centres that year. |
