Description :

EH Derrington, editor of the newly established Yorkes Peninsula advertiser, wrote in his newspaper in 1872,

In reference to religious matters we are bound to say that in no community have we ever seen greater attention paid to religious observances than by residents in the mining townships of Yorke's Peninsula; and the several neighbourhoods are quite remarkable for the number of places of public worship.

Of the population, 80% were members of the Methodist Church. Captain HR Hancock, manager of the Wallaroo and Moonta Mines, was a strict Methodist, and church attendance was strongly encouraged. His son Lipson Hancock was responsible for a system of Sunday School teaching which included adult religious education. Here we see the 'No. 1 Girls' Class' in action, from a series of photographs depicting the workings of the Moonta Mines Wesleyan (Methodist) church.
