Description :

Distant view of a small crowd attending the opening ceremony for the new jetty at Port Julia, South Australia

By 1883 Port Julia was a bustling centre of trade, servicing the ketches that carried wheat and barley from the district across St Vincent Gulf to Port Adelaide.

At a meeting in Curramulka it was decided to petition the Government for a jetty, but not until 1893 was an offer of funding made. This offer subsequently fell through, and so prominent local landholder John Kerry took it upon himself to build his own jetty.

This jetty was roughly made, and a little inadequate, being built too low to be accessible in high tides. Despite this, it served the Port Julia community and its merchants until a superior one took its place in 1913.

Completed in May 1913 the new jetty was 72 metres long, 3.3 metres wide, and importantly, 1.2 metres higher that the old jetty (which was demolished soon thereafter).

The 1913 jetty still stands and having undergone little alteration, is now heritage listed.
