ALFRED BARKER

Born 1812 Chichester, Sussex, England.

Died 24 January 1880, age 67 at St John's Wood, near Enfield.

Barker arrived in 1836 along with Colonel William Light and the Crew of the Rapid (ship). He was married 2 June 1842 in Adelaide, to Priscilla nee Chambers, who had arrived in South Australia in 1837. She was the sister of John and James Chambers, patrons of John McDouall Stuart, all South Australian Northern Pioneers. Priscilla was born c. 1817 in Norfolk, England and died 31 December 1900 at St Johns Wood. They had six children: Mary Maclean 1843 - 1890

Barker took up pastoral interests with Captain W. G. Field of the Rapid (ship). They had property at Yankalilla and Finnis Flat. Later he took up a pastoral lease in the hundred of Baldina, north of Port Wakefield. Barker was well known for the quality of horses bred on his property.
