Johnson's store, Port Wakefield Captain J J Johnson opened a store in Port Wakefield in 1854 operating as a general storekeeper, baker and butcher. This business only operated for two years before collapsing, at which time Johnson went back to sea. However when the Copper Company disposed of the maritime side of its operations Johnson was able to buy the schooner Ewbank and re-established himself as a merchant in the town. With Ewbank he was able to import and export produce himself and his business flourished. He later retired to a large property and his son carried on the business operating a number of vans which carried his goods between Port Wakefield, Crystal Brook and Balaklava. A part of the building still stands in Burra Street. |
