'Kernewek Lowender' means Cornish celebration in the Cornish language. The festival was established to celebrate the Cornish heritage of the people of South Australia's Copper Coast on the northern Yorke Peninsula. The festival centres on the towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. In the 19th century, the copper mines of the area attracted Cornish miners, known as the best hard rock miners in the western world. Kernewek Lowender was started 1973 with a grant of $1,000 from the Premier's Department. It is held biennially on the May long weekend. Events during the festival include 'Fer Kernewek' - a Cornish Fair, 'Meet the Cornish' - a traditional chapel tea with a concert, street parades, mine tours and church services. There is also plenty of music, especially choral and brass band, arts and crafts and Cornish food and ale on offer. |
