Description :

Three portraits of a Wulkini taken at Oenpelli, 1948.

Mountford was a keen photographer and began developing his skills in this area long before his passion for ethnography was ignited. This is evidenced by the fact that his archive contains some early photographs a young Charles entered and exhibited in local photographic competitions.

Whilst for some cultural researchers photography served simply as a means of illustrating 'difference', Mountford's style seemed to highlight the shared humanity of black and white Australians. His portrait photography was especially skilful, and has been oft-used in both his and other's publications.
