Description :

Entry from the journal of C.P. Mountford kept during the American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land. 26 August, 1948. Photographs, drawings and description of a woven bag from Yirrkala used for collecting honey.

Fibrecraft is prevalent in Arnhem Land where archaeological evidence suggests that women have been weaving for thousands of years.

Loosely woven bags are used for carrying plants and other foodstuffs whilst the more tightly woven bags could transport liquids such as water or honey.

The Expedition collected 22 bags from the Yirrkala region.
