Description :

The first anniversary of the launch of the Eureka, the '...first cargo vessel provided for the Murray traffic', was celebrated with a regatta at Goolwa on 24 August 1854. A horse-drawn 'special' train transported passengers from Port Elliot to Goolwa, a trip which took one hour, 10 minutes. The regatta featured various types of water sports between members of the fishing fleet based at Goolwa and those of the whaling fleet at nearby Victor Harbor. Races were held with sailing boats and whaleboats, and there were sailing, rowing and sculling matches.

Despite inclement weather, and the near-drowning of a spectator who tried to retrieve an oar that was floating away, the Observer reported that 'the Committee contemplate making arrangements' for further regattas.

The Goolwa Regatta became a leading South Australian sporting and social event, attended in its 'heyday' by thousands of spectators. Attendances declined in the years following World War II. In recent decades, recreational sailing has become a popular pastime in the region. The renamed Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club is believed to be Australia's oldest yacht club.
