The South Australian State Folk Festival was first held in Burra in 1979. Later it was held in other localities around the State including Mannum, Murray Bridge, Port Adelaide, Goolwa and Victor Harbor. The last statewide folk festival was held in Victor Harbor in 2001.

The Folk Federation of South Australia's focus has shifted from large annual events like the Festivals to creating 'one of the best live acoustic venues in South Australia' at the SA Folk Centre on the corner of George Street and South Road, Thebarton.
