SA Memory. South Australia past and present, for the future

Exploration

From the early 1600s to the 20th century, Europeans braved great risk to explore South Australia's unknown coast, rivers and land. A number of expeditions into the interior enabled accurate cartography, in addition to allowing smaller regions and towns to grow as the boundaries of settlement expanded. The State Library collections represent the pioneering endeavours of these individuals and a number of South Australians who played crucial roles in polar exploration.
